LETTER FROM COMMODORE BILL AUBREY
February was a busy month at SYC. Hopefully you were able to take advantage of the unseasonably warm, dry weather and enjoy time on the water. Some of you may have been fortunate enough to spend a weekend enjoying Ayala Cove.
On the water, we had a successful Midwinter Series race, followed by chili and the Super Bowl. February 20 marked the annual cruise to Richmond.
Club members also enjoyed a number of events beginning with the annual Staff Commodore Luncheon. It is an occasion when 20 or so previous Commodores get together and let each other know how successful their tenure was! It is always a positive experience to be blessed with the knowledge, experience and wisdom the past Commodores share.
The Auxiliary organized and held another successful Valentine’s Party and Auction (both silent and live). As with past auctions, SYC was the big winner as the Auxiliary spreads the generated wealth around the clubhouse as well as the Youth Sailing group. I must say I do not believe I have ever seen SYC looking so splendid. The decorations were amazing. It was very obvious that much time, effort and energy went into transforming the clubhouse into a true Medina Raid (feel free to look that one up).
Entertainment hosted their Academy Awards Oscar Party once again and it was glamor galore from the red carpet and flowing champagne to the gowns and fabulous food and drink. If you have not attended an SYC Oscar night, I encourage you to do so next year. Great time to be had.
On a business note, the Nominating Committee has formally submitted its recommendation to the Executive Board for the replacement of outgoing director Tom Upton, who is relocating to Santa Barbara. The voting members of the Executive Board will be meeting on March 11 to discuss prospective candidates. If you have any questions regarding the process of replacing an existing member of either the EB or FOC, feel free to give me a ring or grab me in the club and we can chat about it. The other option is to take a look at the Bylaws, as they spell out the process.
As part of the Wednesday Evening Speaker Series, Coach Renee teamed up with the folks at Modern Sailing to give a presentation on beginning and continuing sailing education both at our club and at Modern Sailing. The teaming of SYC and Modern Sailing provides an avenue for our members to get professional sailing instruction at a significantly discounted rate. Information on the program as well as sign-up instructions can be found on our website.
Upcoming events on the water include the final Midwinter Series race on March 6; Cruise to Ballena Yacht Club March 12-13 and the “Jaws” Pursuit and Predicted Log Race on March 26.
Other events in March: St. Patrick’s Day celebration, March 12; New Member Appreciation dinner, March 20 and Easter Brunch, March 27. Get your reservations in soon.
One last note, Staff Commodore Lynne Miller and Man about Club, Bill Gargin are looking for volunteers to assist in a Spring Cleaning of the clubhouse, deck and dock. Give Lynne and or Bill a call.
Remember to keep checking the website and Calendar to find out what’s happening at SYC.
