LETTER FROM COMMODORE BILL AUBREY
April was a busy month for our little club. We completed the first race of the Twin Island Series as well as the first race of the Spring Sunset Series. Deana Maggard picked up the ceremonial empty shot gun shell for both races for ‘getting’ the gun! If you have not signed up for either series race, there is still room for new entrants. This is a great time for racing on the bay.
Once again Roger put on another incredible cruise to the St. Francis Yacht Club. I have heard nothing but rave reviews from those who attended. There are plenty of cruise outs remaining this year so go to the club website and sign up.
Opening Day on the bay was a real blast. We had over 450 members and guests visiting our club during the day. Jim and Tim were kind enough to take out 14 of our newest members on Defiance as they led the annual parade along the city front. I thank all the members who attended the no cover charge event as it was one of the most financially successful ‘opening days’ the club has had in years. Hopefully we can continue having positive events without assessing cover charges. A big Thank You goes out to Miriam and all the volunteers who assisted with the day; it’s a huge undertaking.
As for club business, the Flag Officer and Chairs unanimously approved the appointment of Kay Mitzel as the new Communications Chair, replacing Robert Stoeber. The Board welcomes Kay’s presence and contribution. We greatly appreciate Robert’s expertise and continued support of the website.
Membership is the key to any club success and the Sausalito Yacht Club is no exception. While our membership has grown significantly in the last few years there is still room for growing the base. The Board recognizes that the best source of new members is from our existing membership. As such, the club is offering $100 in galley credits for any member who refers a new member into the club. So go round up some new members.
Final status of our deck: DONE! There was the situation with a few tables that seemed to be ‘melting’ which was extremely frustrating, but we have been assured that the manufacturer will replace the damaged tables. We expect the new tables in late June or early July. Even with a few not so perfect tabletops, the deck and furniture look great. Stop by and enjoy the view of the bay while also enjoying the new fire pit area.
Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to take out one of our paddle boards and paddled down to Salitos AND back. Apparently there were a few wagers made as to whether I was going to return soaking wet or not. I can honestly say that I came back completely dry. And all naysayers paid up, thank you Ross! The kayaks and paddle boards are there for our members at no cost so please use them. You’ll have a good time while getting in a bit of exercise.
Upcoming events: Cinco De Mayo, May 5; Mother’s Day Brunch, May 8; Night in Greece, May 14; Angel Island Lamb and Oyster Feed, May 15; Comedy Night, May 26.
Eight Bells: Thomas Davis, Dennis Kavanagh, Rob McGowan, and Mark Shafer – may they remain in our thoughts.
