I am new to the program Call the Youth Sailing Director to discuss your option.  Class placement is dependent on age, prior experience (not required), and size.

Sea Urchins:

This class will be offered to children age 6-8 with no prior boating experience.  Class will run Monday-Friday from 9am-12:00pm.  The class will focus on getting children comfortable around the water and boats.  Daily activities will include sailing related art projects, teaching the beginning concepts of sailing, group sailing with instructors, and local field trips to beaches on sailboats and motor boats.  Students will not in a sailboat without an instructor.

If at the end of a one week session your Sea Urchin wants to continue their sailing experience arrangements can be made for them to join the second week of a Beginning Sailing Session.  Contact the Youth Director for details.

Beginner Sailing:

The beginner JY class will be an introduction to sailing and seamanship for our youngest students ages 8-11. Students will be introduced to the water, some for the first time, in a fun and comfortable environment. They will be sailing 2 per boat in one of our trainer Optis. The ability to sail upwind and gain confidence is the main focus.

The syllabus for this class is based on a two week session and therefore we strongly encourage your child to join us for the full two weeks.  If your only option is to take a one week class you must contact the Youth Director for permission.

Intermediate – Adventure Sailing:

This class is for sailors ages 11-14 who have prior sailing experience but do not wish to race.  Students will continue to learn about general sailing skills and seamanship.  The class will use our new fleet of RS Terras with 2 sailors as they go on adventures around Richardson Bay.  Main goals of the class are to promote confidence on the water and independence while venturing away from the yacht club.

The syllabus for this class is based on a two week session and therefore we strongly encourage your child to join us for the full two weeks.  If your only option is to take a one week class you must contact the Youth Director for permission.

Opti Race Class:

Advanced Opti class will be geared for younger sailors ages 10-15 who are ready to sail an Opti single-handed. Our coaches will be teaching more intricate sailing skills and towards the end of the class, racing will be introduced. They will review past skills and build new confidence in the sport.

The syllabus for this class is based on a two week session and therefore we strongly encourage your child to join us for the full two weeks.  If your only option is to take a one week class you must contact the Youth Director for permission.

High School/Double-hand CFJ:

Our Double Handed class is a fun introduction to sailing and seamanship for our older students or those who plan to sail on their High School team. Students will be introduced to sailing in depowered CFJ’s which are double handed youth sailing boats. At first instructors may sail with their students with as many as 3 per boat. Eventually the students will be sailing double-handed. Upwind sailing and basic seamanship are the main focus.

The syllabus for these classes are based on a two week session and therefore we strongly encourage your child to join us for the full two weeks.  If your only option is to take a one week class you must contact the Youth Director for permission.
