Join the Race Committee

Have you ever wondered how sailboat racers know where to go on the water and when to go there? What all of the guns, horns and flags are about? Why small power boats are zipping all around dragging colored inflatable shapes? That’s the Race Committee’s job.

For every sailboat race, there is a group of volunteers who understand the rules, regulations and procedures necessary to conduct sailboat racing on a consistent basis. Throughout the year, SYC’s Race Committee conducts our races and helps other clubs on the bay the with their events.

Events vary in complexity from a couple of fleets racing in our Thursday night beer can races or Twin Island series to our classic and one-design events that often qualify racer for higher level championships.

Serving on the Race Committee is very helpful for racing sailors to gain a better understanding of how racing is conducted from the inside out. It’s also a good place for former racers to apply their knowledge and experience. Not a racer but maybe want to race some day? This is a great way to learn the ropes by observing and participating on the Committee. Not a sailor or a racer but would like to learn and get involved with club activities? That’s a possibility too.
